kintsukuroi – the broken jar – autumn suite by Magnar Åm, TERJUNGENSEMBLE

In autumn 2026, the TERJUNGENSEMBLE and conductor Lars-Erik ter Jung will perform Magnar Åm’s Kintsukuroi – The Broken Vase, an autumn suite from 2024, in its entirety for the first time, having worked on this nine-movement work for some time over an extended period.

The Autumn Suite represents an important milestone in Åm’s artistic career and, in many ways, sums up his compositional style and body of work. The composer himself wrote, whilst working on the Autumn Suite, about ‘the potential in everything and everyone’ – ‘I am not yet finished with life or with maturing. But when I look back on this restless being that is me, I see more clearly the paths this person has taken and continues to take. It makes me want to compose a suite that can embrace the entire journey of maturation from birth and into the colourful autumn of my life.’

Like so many of his works, the Autumn Suite emerged at the intersection of life experiences and composition, i.e. a process involving reworking.

Magnar Åm will turn 75 in April 2027. He is a striking personality and a distinctive voice in Norwegian musical life, and both the ensemble and the conductor have long harboured a strong desire to be able to perform this entire work. The concert on the 6th of September in Volda Church is an important milestone on the road to the composer’s anniversary next year.
