New album is out on April 15! Forest Night Music / H2O-trilogy II. TERJUNGENSEMBLE’s commissions of the new concerto Forest Night Music by Jan Erik Mikalsen, with Miriam Helms Ålien, violin, and Lara Macri, harp, and the new version of H2O-trilogy II for string ensemble by Cecilie Ore, are featured on our new album - two huge pieces of music of today by two great Norwegian composers. TERJUNGENSEMBLE was established in 2019 as a project-based chamber orchestra. The ensemble has taken a prominent position as one of the leading independent ensembles on the Norwegian music scene and has established itself with a distinct contemporary profile and a clear ambition to regularly commission new works for chamber orchestra. Several of the ensemble’s commissioned works have received nominations and awards. An overarching objective is to present both classical and new music within the field of art music. New music is featured on concert programmes alongside historical works by composers such as Mozart, Haydn, Bach, Mendelssohn and Purcell, creating a dialogue that is both contrasting and stimulating.
TERJUNGENSEMBLE has received considerable attention and acclaim following concerts at events including the Ultima Festival, the Oslo Church Music Festival and the Hardanger Music Festival, as well as after the releases of its first four albums. The album Stabat Mater, featuring music by Tyler Futrell, was released on BIS Records in 2024 and was nominated for the Spellemann Prize. Kimen, Den annen sang and Vóren / Fleurs have all been released on Fabra. These recordings have stood out as significant contributions to the dissemination of music from our own time.
The fifth album, featuring Cecilie Ore’s H2O Trilogy II and Jan Erik Mikalsen’s new violin concerto Forest Night Music, with Miriam Helms Ålien as soloist, will be released in April this year, also on the Fabra label.
The ensemble has emphasised achieving important goals of commissioning works by Norwegian composers, realising recordings of the new works, engaging talented younger soloists (Astrid Nordstad, Eirin Rognerud, Pierre Xhonneux, Synnøve Brøndbo Plassen, Miriam Helms Ålien, Silje Aker Johnsen, Ingebjørg Lognvik Reinholdt, Lara Macri and others) and integrating younger, newly established freelancers into the ensemble.
Several new works have been performed since 2020, including the award-winning Fleurs by Jan Erik Mikalsen (Work of the Year 2023) and Å vere I livet by Agnes Ida Pettersen (Edvard Prize 2021), as well as works by Jon Øivind Ness (Vóren), Martin Ødegaard (Woods), Ørjan Matre (Three songs after Ragnar Vigdal), and, more recently, Cecilie Ore’s H2O-trilogy II and Jan Erik Mikalsen’s Forest Night Music. The performances of Tyler Futrell’s Stabat Mater in 2022 helped to raise the ensemble’s profile further and bring it greater attention.
Throughout 2026, work on completing Magnar Åm’s kintsukuroi - den knuste krukka, haustsuite (2024) (Kintsukuroi – The Broken Vase, Autumn Suite), a large-scale work in nine movements, will be a key focus; the work will be performed in its entire form in Volda in early September, among other venues, and will subsequently be recorded.
TERJUNGENSEMBLE has no permanent financial support, but is generously supported by the Arts Council Norway, the Audio Visual Fund, the Norwegian Composers' Society, the Fund for Performing Artists, the Furestiftelsen, the City of Oslo and the Ludimus Fund.
